The monastic complex at Dealu near Târgovişte was one of the greatest cultural centres of the Middle Ages. From the original Greek monastic complex there remains only one church, founded by Radu the Great (1499-1501). Inside, a crypt contains the head of Prince Michael the Brave, executed in 1601. Under the command of this famous Romanian prince, the monastery secured the defence of Târgovişte in 1595 in front of Sinan Pasha’s troops.
